tumblr-logo-icon-7.png I thought I'd mention that there is a new-ish friending community, 2017 Revival, that I have joined because, frankly, while those who have remained on my friends-list throughout the ages are cherished, many others have moved on. The problem, I guess, with mainly being involved from the beginning with fandom and when that peters out, not entirely but some, not really knowing where to go next. My journal had become a little too one-sided. Me talking, no one listening. Can't help but wonder...why bother.
So, I am now making new friends, those who post more about life, politics, art and such, and that, in turn, is making me pretty darn happy. Change is good. New friends are always good. So, just letting you know in case you are of a need to change things up a little too :)

One last thing. Livejournal has provided a cute little heart 'LIKE' button on the comments page of every post so that, if you don't feel you have anything to comment, you can click the heart 'LIKE' button and then people who are like me who get very very sad when no one comments to their painstakingly crafted, or not, posts can at least get 'LIKED'.And 'LIKED' is good. Very very good.
I would like to thank [livejournal.com profile] connorblond for making me awae of this feature which, until he 'LIKED' something I'd posted, I had no idea even existed.
     Easy frickin' peasy. Yes?

The image combines two separate exposures taken on Nov. 20, 2016, by the High Resolution Imaging Science Experiment (HiRISE) camera on NASA's Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter. For presentation, the exposures were processed separately to optimize detail visible on both Earth and the moon. The moon is much darker than Earth and would barely be visible if shown at the same brightness scale as Earth.
The combined view retains the correct positions and sizes of the two bodies relative to each other. The distance between Earth and the moon is about 30 times the diameter of Earth. Earth and the moon appear closer than they actually are in this image because the observation was planned for a time at which the moon was almost directly behind Earth, from Mars' point of view, to see the Earth-facing side of the moon.

In the image, the reddish feature near the middle of the face of Earth is Australia. When the component images were taken, Mars was about 127 million miles (205 million kilometers) from Earth.

We must not confuse dissent with disloyalty…We will not be driven by fear into an age of unreason.
          – Edward R. Murrow

From: The Daily Beast
This is on us, not just journalists but all citizens who are committed to putting patriotism ahead of partisanship. This is our Murrow moment. “We can deny our heritage and our history,” Ed Murrow warned, “but we cannot escape responsibility for the result.”

Murrow famously risked his career to confront a popular and powerful conservative populist demagogue, Senator Joe McCarthy. He secured his legacy through a commitment to independence and integrity.

McCarthy used lies and innuendo to intimidate critics, famously parading a fake list of communists in the State Department, accusing a Democratic administration of participating in a vast conspiracy to subvert our sovereignty and falsely declaring that the ACLU a communist front group. In an ironic bit of symmetry, among his aides was a young true believer named Roy Cohn, who would later become attorney for both mob bosses and Donald Trump. It was from Cohn that Trump learned to never apologize, always attack.

_____
If you don't know about, or much about, Edward R. Murrow then let the
movie:
Good Night, and Good Luck, directed by George Clooney,
be your introduction. Excellent film with David Strathairn givng a stellar performance.

Rotation of musical note From: YouTube_1000 young komuz players perform "Mash Botoy" at the second World Nomad Games in Cholpon Ata, Kyrgyzstan. First time in history 1000 players performed together.

From: Atlas Obscura:

At an arena in Cholpon-ata, a lakeside resort in Kyrgyzstan, the 2016 World Nomad Games kicked off in spectacular fashion on September 3. Horse riders showboated their skills; some of them rode while on fire, others lay horizontally across the saddle. An armor-clad Steven Seagal was the guest of honor, as competitors paraded behind their national flags.

The World Nomad Games, which finish on September 8, are designed to promote the nomadic cultural and sporting traditions of central Asia. Although many of the sports are rarely played outside of a handful of countries in the region, 40 nations participate in the competition.

At the opening ceremony, however, one of the showpieces was musical rather than sporting. A thousand players of the komuz, the three-stringed national instrument of Kyrgyzstan, played a song in perform harmony and rhythm. The musicians lined up in rows, dressed in traditional attire and many men wearing the kalpak, a white felt hat. Women, men and children all played on one knee.

The dazzling performance ushered in five days of sporting events, including er enish (horseback wrestling), kok-boru (a form of polo played with a goat carcass instead of a ball) and jereed (equestrian javelin).
