I have embarked on this series at last. Book one down, I am on to book two
15_The Great Courses_History of the Ancient World: A Global Perspective_Professor Gregory S Aldrete_48 Lectures
          Excellent course!!
These next three relate to a book I have wanted to do for YEARS. I've come to realize that, since this little picture book relates to Lauren's childhood, doing it will be theraputic, a transition from my little girl, Lauren and my adult son, Aaron. Once done, we have another picture book in mind, a joint project, that deals with that transition.

32_Describe CHILD's (Outside) Style
33_Describe INSIDE Style
34_Describe ADVENTURE Style
This deals with myart scheduling because, after watching a couple of documentaries about artists, that in the main they work on many things at once. I never have but now I do, two different kinds of drawings and the above-mentioned book

We must not confuse dissent with disloyalty…We will not be driven by fear into an age of unreason.
          – Edward R. Murrow

From: The Daily Beast
This is on us, not just journalists but all citizens who are committed to putting patriotism ahead of partisanship. This is our Murrow moment. “We can deny our heritage and our history,” Ed Murrow warned, “but we cannot escape responsibility for the result.”

Murrow famously risked his career to confront a popular and powerful conservative populist demagogue, Senator Joe McCarthy. He secured his legacy through a commitment to independence and integrity.

McCarthy used lies and innuendo to intimidate critics, famously parading a fake list of communists in the State Department, accusing a Democratic administration of participating in a vast conspiracy to subvert our sovereignty and falsely declaring that the ACLU a communist front group. In an ironic bit of symmetry, among his aides was a young true believer named Roy Cohn, who would later become attorney for both mob bosses and Donald Trump. It was from Cohn that Trump learned to never apologize, always attack.

If you don't know about, or much about, Edward R. Murrow then let the
Good Night, and Good Luck, directed by George Clooney,
be your introduction. Excellent film with David Strathairn givng a stellar performance.

So, I wake up too early this morning, 6am-ish, and having nothing better to do, started flipping through ideas in my mind. One thing we've been trying to do is bring a few more layers to the holidays and although this year we have done that pretty well, I rrealized that something was still missing...movies.

During my kidhood, we always watched 'Christmas' movies which meant anything from It's A Womderful Life to The Wizard of and realizing that we aren't, mainly probably because we don't own any having just Rise of the Guardians, which I love, and Patrick Stewart's A Christmas Carol, I decided that we should get us some.
The question became, by 6:15am, how to remedy this, how to get us some more. Well, buy some, right? I decided to add A White Christmas and then thought it might be nice, and inclusive, to see what David and Aaron would like to add. Satisfied, I went on to other pressing ideas and problems until it became a reasonable time to arise, around 8am-ish.

Fast forward to 9am, I explained to Aaron the situation to get his contribution which was The Nightmare Before Christmas, to be viewed at Halloween, and How the Grinch Who Stole Christmas plus It's A Wonderful Life for well...Christmas. I explained to David the situation to get his contribution and he offered his favorite from his kidhood, Laurel & Hardy's The March of the Wooden Soldiers.
By 9:30am they were all ordered and by 10am confirmed by amazon. It's almost too easy and yet, I feel strangely satisfied by this whole process. Come up with an idea, run it by mi familia for their input, and a couple of hours late, it's a fait accompli!! Cool :)

Let me tell you about last Friday night & you can decide.
National Theatre Live, if you haven't already head about them, you can find out more here, with the below as a brief summary taken from their site...

'National Theatre Live launched in June 2009 with a broadcast of the National Theatre production of Phèdre with Helen Mirren. We’ve since broadcast more than fourty other productions live, from both the National Theatre and from other theatres in the UK.

Our broadcasts have now been experienced by over 5.5 million people in over 2,000 venues around the world, including over 650 venues in the UK alone. Past broadcasts from the National Theatre have included Danny Boyle’s Frankenstein with Benedict Cumberbatch and Jonny Lee Miller; War Horse; Man and Superman with Ralph Fiennes; and Everyman with Chiwetel Ejiofor.'
...has presented several productions in our area. In fact, Aaron and I saw Peter Boyle's Frankenstein at our local Century 21 movie theater at our local Oakridge Mall a couple of years ago. So, when I heard that NTL was going to present

at a much posher venue, The Hammer Theatre, I decided to get David involved and we all three had a terrific time. The cast was excellent, the stage design and music were excellent. Just everything in general was excellent. I swear Benedict is near tears through half of the production, an amazing performance. Left is from our seats before the start of the play/film while right is from the stairs into the lobby as we were leaving.

We arrived downtown early and so, after dinner, at a little hole-in-the-wall Iguanas Burritozilla, we wandered over to San Jose's annual for-over-25-years Christmas in the Park festivities.
Below is a not-good photo of a vast number of little trees that local organizations, such as firestation, boy and girl scout troops, various elementary and middle schools etc, decorate

They take up half of the park with the other half taken up with displays and rides, the big tree and Santa's little cottage. Below are photo snagged from google images.

Cesar Chavez Park with Cathedral Basilica of St. Joseph in the forground.
I love palm trees wrapped with lights & the city tree with the ferris wheel.

A whirl-y twirl-y ride & Santa's Cottge.

And, finally, two of the many life-sized animate scenes.

So, what do you think? Is a film of a play, even if a really well done film, a film done by the very people who put on the play, still a play? I don't think so personally. I think you have to be breathing the very same air the actors are but still, these guys do a really good job bring culture to the (unwashed) masses. And that you're watching at the same time as many around the world are makes it feel quite special.

Kind of coming down to the end of this my current mission101 and so, I think I'll report on some of the projects I've 'oh YAY' completed or 'le sigh'  failed.

Number 20 was a challenge I snagged from
[ profile] fansee which is the WATCH 100 MOVIES IN A YEAR Challenge. Done is done and then some. I've included a couple of series, grouped at the end, AND in doing this, I also completed a challenge I gave myself to watch the TOP 100 MOVIES according to some soch LIST that I now forget. I started this project four years ago, 25 movies per year, and am now done.

I checked around and this seems pretty legit except I couldn't find reference to who exactly the 358 film-makers are. Still, I snagged it from LIFEHACKLANE who snagged it from BFI Film Forever's, The International Film Magazine Sight&Sound who do a survey once a decade, this one in 2012
I was pleased to note that I've already seen eight of the movies that I can actually remember, in blue, two I think I've seen but can't remember, in red, and five I know I haven't or at least strongly believe I haven't. So, the ones in black and red, except for the Bicycle Thieves because they don't have it, have all gone down on Netflix. Happy watching to us.

1. Tokyo Story – Yasujiro Ozu (1953)
2. 2001: A Space Odyssey – Stanley Kubrick (1968)
3. Citizen Kane – Orson Welles (1941)
4. 8 ½ – Federico Fellini (1963)
5. Taxi Driver – Martin Scorsese (1976)
6. Apocalypse Now – Francis Ford Coppola (1979)
7. The Godfather – Francis Ford Coppola (1972)
8. Vertigo – Alfred Hitchcock (1958)
9. The Mirror – Andrei Tarkovsky (1974)
10. Bicycle Thieves – Vittorio De Sica (1949)
11. Breathless Jean Luc Godard (1960)
12. Raging Bull - Martin Scorsese (1980)
13. Persona - Ingmar Bergman (1966)
14. The 400 Blows - François Truffaut (1959)
15. Andrei Rublev - Andrei Tarkovsky (1966)

What about you guys? Seen them all? Or none? Any you particularly adore? Or hate? And if you could add one more movie to the list, which would you add? I'd add 12 Angry Men (1957). Or maybe Dr. Strangelove Or How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb (1964). And then there's always The Deer Hunter (1978).
