I haven't read the book, no interest in het porn whatsoever, but a friend of mine did and well, as a new experience for her, she liked it, but as someone who has never read any fanfic, let alone porn, before, she has nothing to compare with. Has anyone read it and if so, what did you think of the author's writing ability?

And I realise I'm outing myself as someone who really isn't up to date with things. *gg*

What little I know is that the author is a British fanfic writer, maybe Twilight??, and that her first book of a trilogy, 50 Shades of Grey, is HUGE...mainstream HUGE. In fact, they're making it into a movie. She put the three books out in like a minute or two. The protagonist is a very young woman, 17???, who meets a 44 year old business man named Gray and his 50 shades have to do with his 50 sex positions especially those involving BDSM apparently. As far as this goes, being out of the loop is just fine :D

For me, it was the LJ reference, citing here as a place to find the 'good stuff' that the author could learn from.

I didn't read it, but I heard nothing good about it so far. All I know is, it used to be Twilight fanfic, now made to a book. That alone makes me cringe, because Twilight is a totally no-go for me.

I read through it. It's poorly disguised and written fan fiction. She took her erotica fan fiction and improved on it a bit. it's not the worst thing I've ever read but, it's not literature. It's soft porn in a printed book that has caught the attention of women, I'd think, who don't realize that BDSM is practiced by straight and gay couples in the U.S. All your friend would had to do is look up the acronym above and could find a lot of information on the subject. Some of it is arousing in itself though not intended to be.

It must be a search for information, not porn sites. I did one in 2004 or 2005 and found a lot of information I didn't know. The author knows how to write sentences and paragraphs, but, to me it's the heart of the codependency, abuse aspect of a 17 year old virgin girl who gets groomed by a 44 year old man who knows little or nothing about giving in a relationship unless it's through BD.

She constantly thinks she can change him which is the saddest part of the whole first book. Anyone coming from a background of domination and was damaged by it or wounded would not benefit from reading this fiction. The problem I saw on Dr. Drew's show was that the women on his panel that night kept insisting that it was fiction when it isn't. It exists in real life and if they want to experience it they just need to go online to get involved for real.

It may be role playing for them in a thirty year marriage where the sex has gotten boring, but if someone like the above were to read it, they could get hooked into some really nasty stuff. Confusing because this girl thinks this man loves her. To me, he was using her and had some feelings. Not worth picking up if you want good, well written fiction that isn't really fiction in parts of our culture, gay and straight.

Dr. Drew was appalled because he treats people who have been damaged by this kind of codependence and abuse and would be triggered by it, as I well know. There's so much confusion n a person who has been dominated by one or both parents or perpetrators. Sex and love get disconnected and can get really twisted in odd ways.

I read B/J fiction where they explore the BD world as play and supposedly the release and peace found in surrendering totally to another person is almost like a religious experience. I don't buy into that personally and quit reading stories like that even though what a person thinks is not what is real. Women like the ones on Dr. Drew can evidently compartmentalize; wounded persons may not be able to do so as readily.

the women accused Dr. Drew of being a man and telling them what they could and could not like what they should and should not do. I watched his Celebrity Rehab and saw women and men damaged by codependence and abuse as the underlying illness in their drug abuse, so I know where he is coming from.

I imagine that you are right about role playing, experiencing something vicariously that such women would never experience in their real lives and about triggers for those who have been abused. The more you describe the narrative, the more I realize I have no interest in reading them, there are just so many more interesting books out there for me to chose from. Very thorough review, thank you.
