The 38th Annual Santa Cruz Fungus Fair

Our approach, this is the back of the center where the Fair was held, included because I think this is pretty cool and, one more time, Cindy, Lauren, & Jimmy. Jimmy has had this event on his whiteboard since September, which tells you just a little bit about this kid. He's...interesting, nerdy, very smart, and vague neurotic, but mostly he's Lauren's best friend and that's pretty much all that matters, just like his mom is mine. How nicely did that work out :D

That's pretty cool! I like all the different forms and colors.

so do I and this is only just a small sample of the varieties they had.

The cauliflower mushroom looks like a big flower -- naturally that's my favorite. ;-)

[identity profile] gaeln.livejournal.com 2012-01-23 09:42 pm (UTC)(link)
naturally, although they all are pretty cool, you must admit.

I forget sometimes that fungus comes in so many different varieties haha These are fascinating :)
Glad you all had a good time.
*hugs*

and this isn't even 1/ 5 of the varieties they had on display. We did have a good time and learned a lot.

Wow, those fungi are amazing, especially that third last one!

[identity profile] gaeln.livejournal.com 2012-01-23 09:15 pm (UTC)(link)
they are, aren't they? I was amazed and delighted and I actually learned a lot as well, so win/ win.

[identity profile] flashfly.livejournal.com 2012-01-24 07:14 am (UTC)(link)
Is the cauliflower mushroom edible? He's pretty.

[identity profile] gaeln.livejournal.com 2012-01-24 06:44 pm (UTC)(link)
Yes, yes he is. The one in the last photo, with the descriptive skull-and-crossbones on his tag, isn't. The one above with the question mark amuses me, apparently no one's had the guts to try.

[identity profile] flashfly.livejournal.com 2012-01-25 06:35 am (UTC)(link)
I totally missed the question mark. Do we only know if something's poisonous because someone tries and dies? No other way to test? Brutal.

[identity profile] gaeln.livejournal.com 2012-01-26 03:41 am (UTC)(link)
Interesting that you should ask because the one lecture we attend was on Toxicology, which focused only on poisonous mushrooms and violent sickness or untimely death were the only 2 options discussed, so...? not sure :D

I love blood grapefruit especially buttered & sugared and broiled nice & warm....yum!!!

[identity profile] flashfly.livejournal.com 2012-01-29 12:16 am (UTC)(link)
I have had grapefruit with honey (only recently ) but never buttered and warm!

[identity profile] gaeln.livejournal.com 2012-01-30 12:04 am (UTC)(link)
you put a dollop of butter right in the little hole in the center, sprinkle sugar and cinnamon actually over it and broil for just a few minutes...lovely. I'll have to try your honey idea, sounds delicious.

[identity profile] flashfly.livejournal.com 2012-01-30 08:06 am (UTC)(link)
I may try that one day if I ever work myself up to turn on the broiler. :)

[identity profile] gaeln.livejournal.com 2012-01-30 06:52 pm (UTC)(link)
All you want to do is read and sleep and, apparently, you're finding it too difficult to even turn on the broiler. This is not the image that I'd worked up in my mind of the woman I thought you to be, all full of wonder-lust and taking photos and such. Now...now I'm just SO confused. Still, when you do try it, I hope you like the grapefruit, is truly yum.

I use the microwave, and I go to the gym every single day, and today I ate raw broccoli and an orange and an apple and tonight I'm going to get 8 hours of sleep and all my dishes are washed and I have a new rain coat. Do you feel better?

[identity profile] gaeln.livejournal.com 2012-02-02 07:30 pm (UTC)(link)
'Do you feel better?'
Perhaps, a little...maybe.

Can I confess, I've never owned a raincoat, congrats on getting a brand new one, I only use the microwave to reheat coffee and while I actually did once joined a gym, for like a minute, I kept on hitting Starbucks on the way back home, so I essentially lost confidence in my overall prospects. And, frankly, I haven't gotten 8 hours sleep since I was 10 or 11, more like 4 to 5 hours per, so alright, I admit it, you are healthier than me. Happy?

[identity profile] flashfly.livejournal.com 2012-02-04 05:55 am (UTC)(link)
I never reheat coffee. I drink it and if it gets warmish, or cool, I drink it like that.

I'm happy, if you're happy.
