What happens to Justin Taylor on that horrible night of their senior prom not only changes him, but that unimaginable brutality changes Daphne Chanders as well. That night changes the course of her life, although she couldn‘t even have begun to understand that at the time. They are the rare few who actually understand, while they are going through a life-changing event, that they actually will be somehow different when they come through to the other side. Most are just trying to survive. Just like Daphne had been.

But before that night she has no real direction. She’d thought mostly in terms of fun careers like fashion or interior design, not that there is anything wrong with that kind of thinking. It is just that for her anyway, there isn’t anything very much right about these particular choices either. After that night, though, something starts nagging at the back of her mind, but she can’t quite figure out what it is. She can’t quite make it clear, so she mostly just ignores her back -of-the-mind nagging and went on about her life as usual.

She decides on the Art Institute because their Interior Design Program looks wonderful, and even though she loves it, she also knows that this direction isn’t quite where she is supposed to be. Or maybe not even vaguely where she is supposed to be, but who are we to judge. During her year there, she continues her search, and when she discovers the Health Sciences Division at Chatham College, she is pretty sure she’s found just what she is supposed to do.

Daphne applies for and is accepted into their Occupational Therapy Program, a program designed to help train people to help others who are mentally, physically, developmentally or emotionally disabled with the ultimate goal of restoring their independence as much as possible through direct involvement and education. Like she’s helped Justin after he’d been released from the hospital only much more so.

She completes their five year master’s program at twenty-four, and in so doing; she finds her life’s work. Over the years she will begin to specialize, to find her actual niche, which will ultimately be working with children and teens in hospitals, clinics and community agencies throughout Pittsburgh. She too will become a star in her own little world helping people survive the worst that life could throw at them and teaching them how to do that with dignity and grace. Daphne Chanders is all about dignity and grace and about surviving and she will spend her life teaching so many how that was done.

She has her family, her husband Charlie and their two point four kids. The two are Denise, named after Daphne’s mother and Jonathan, named after Charlie’s dad. The point 4 was her first pregnancy, the one that miscarries at four months, the daughter that never had a name, but who will also never be forgotten.

Daphne’s life will be full, her life will be complete, yet not without its pain and its setbacks, but through it all the one thing Daphne will know, the one thing she will be sure of is that she will have made a difference. It will have mattered that she existed and the reality of that is more than enough to have made her a star.
