I disliked the George death, it was handled so meaninglessly, I thought. But in that book, Dobby's death was the only one to move me to tears. I was annoyed by that whole first chapter-- there must have been a dozen better ways to get Harry out of that house--many of them appearing in fanfiction, lol! One of my favorites in the fandom is Aspeninthesunlight's A Family Like No Other, and the related stories. I believe the first one is A Year Like No Other. It is AU but marvelously written.
