Quiz: What New Book Should You Read This Spring?

Their little quiz netted me this which actually sounds pretty interesting.
From amazon_Brace yourself for the most astonishing, challenging, upsetting, and profoundly moving book in many a season. An epic about love and friendship in the twenty-first century that goes into some of the darkest places fiction has ever traveled and yet somehow improbably breaks through into the light. Truly an amazement—and a great gift for its publisher.
When four classmates from a small Massachusetts college move to New York to make their way, they're broke, adrift, and buoyed only by their friendship and ambition. There is kind, handsome Willem, an aspiring actor; JB, a quick-witted, sometimes cruel Brooklyn-born painter seeking entry to the art world; Malcolm, a frustrated architect at a prominent firm; and withdrawn, brilliant, enigmatic Jude, who serves as their center of gravity. Over the decades, their relationships deepen and darken, tinged by addiction, success, and pride. Yet their greatest challenge, each comes to realize, is Jude himself, by midlife a terrifyingly talented litigator yet an increasingly broken man, his mind and body scarred by an unspeakable childhood, and haunted by what he fears is a degree of trauma that he’ll not only be unable to overcome—but that will define his life forever.
In rich and resplendent prose, Yanagihara has fashioned a tragic and transcendent hymn to brotherly love, a masterful depiction of heartbreak, and a dark examination of the tyranny of memory and the limits of human endurance.

I snagged this from tumblr who snagged it from The Los Angeles Times's The Envelope

The five actors are Robert Downey Jr. for The Judge, Eddie Redmayne for The Theory of Everything, Michael Keaton for Birdman, Benedict Cumberbatch for The Imitation Game, and Steve Carell for Foxcatcher.

Their interview, with several little vid, can be found here.

'Sean Bean dies in everything because it’s the universe trying to correct the hole ripped in it due to the fact that his name doesn’t rhyme when it should'

Seen Bean or Shawn Bawn?!!? For all I know where he's from in the north of England, his name does rhyme at least to some greater extent than the way most of us say it :) This little post has been reblogged over 65,000 times. Very good.

"'I just love that Tumblr’s problem with 50 Shades of Grey isn’t “my goodness, it’s so pornographic!” but instead (is) “oh my god this is the worst written porn I’ve ever read am I allowed to send this author some choice livejournal entries so she can improve her style'"

Just Tumblr spreading around a little Livejournal love :D
I haven't read the book, no interest in het porn whatsoever, but a friend of mine did and well, as a new experience for her, she liked it, but as someone who has never read any fanfic, let alone porn, before, she has nothing to compare with. Has anyone read it and if so, what did you think of the author's writing ability?

This is totally fun and endearing!!

Pando
(Latin for "I spread"), also known as The Trembling Giant,[1][2] is a clonal colony of a single male Quaking Aspen (Populus tremuloides) determined to be a single living organism by identical genetic markers[3] and one massive underground root system. The plant is estimated to weigh collectively 6,000,000 kg (6,600 short tons),[4] making it the heaviest known organism.[5] The root system of Pando, at an estimated 80,000 years old, is among the oldest known living organisms.[6]

Pando is located in the Fishlake National Forest, near Fish Lake at the western edge of the Colorado Plateau in South-central Utah.

Ok, so I did a little detective work because on tumblr, equixen2 reblogged an amazing post about the meaning of fandom from negative-euphoria-rabbit who had maybe reblogged it via secretlifeofachocoholic, I can't be sure. Still, in checking these 3 tumblrs, I couldn't actually find authorship and I wanted authorship before posting it to Livejournal.

So, digging further, I found that gointorosedale was 'sourced', whatever that means, at one point, but a leads a lead, so I went to his/ her tumblr and scanning to the bottom of the page which contained the meaning of fandom text, I found this: http://hesychasm.livejournal.com/187818.html. The real and truly source.

The long and the short of it is: The following was written by one of us, [livejournal.com profile] hesychasm, way back in 2006 and who rnot uneasonably got a zillion (or over 300) comments to her original LJ post and over 33,000 notes for the reblogged text on tumblr. And how cool is it that she's still active on Livejournal?

*Fandom is focus. Fandom is obsession. Fandom is insatiable consumption. Fandom is sitting for hours in front of a TV screen a movie screen a computer screen with a comic book a novel on your lap. Fandom is eyestrain and carpal tunnel syndrome and not enough exercise and staying up way, way past your bedtime.

Fandom is people you don't tell your mother you're meeting. Fandom is people in the closet, people out and proud, people in costumes, people in T-shirts with slogans only fifty others would understand. Fandom is a loud dinner conversation scaring the waiter and every table nearby.

Fandom is you in Germany and me in the US and him in Australia and her in Japan. Fandom is a sofabed in New York, a roadtrip to Oxnard, a friend behind a face in London. Fandom talks past timezones and accents and backgrounds. Fandom is conversation. Communication. Contact.

Fandom is drama. Fandom is melodrama. Fandom is high school. Fandom is Snacky's law and Godwin's law and Murphy's law. Fandom is smarter than you. Fandom is stupider than you. Fandom is five arguments over and over and over again. Fandom is the first time you've ever had them.

Fandom is female. Fandom is male. Fandom lets female play at being male. Fandom bends gender, straight, gay, prude, promiscuous. Fandom is fantasy. Fandom doesn't care about norms or taboos or boundaries. Fandom cares too much about norms and taboos and boundaries. Fandom is not real life. Fandom is closer than real life. Fandom knows what you're really like in the bedroom. Fandom is how you would never, could never be in the bedroom.

Fandom is shipping, never shipping, het, slash, gen, none of the above, more than the above. Fandom is love for characters you didn't create. Fandom is recreating the characters you didn't create. Fandom is essays, stories, betas, parodies, filks, zines, usenet posts, blog posts, message board posts, emails, chats, petitions, wank, concrit, feedback, recs. Fandom is writing for the first time since you were twelve. Fandom is finally calling yourself a writer.

Fandom is signal and response. Fandom is a stranger moving you to tears, anger, laughter. Fandom is you moving a stranger to speak.

Fandom is distraction. Fandom is endangering your job, your grades, your relationships, your bank account. Fandom gets no work done. Fandom is too much work. Fandom was/is just a phase.
