A Time From Now

For Every Celebration, Every Party, Every Event that Matters
***************
 Four Months Later_Three Years 1/2 - Pittsburgh

Everyone and I mean ab…so…lute…ly everyone showed up for Ben’s tenure celebration including Justin who somehow managed to tear himself away from Gotham City and ohmygod baby was lookin‘ so fine. His was a look that was beyond reproach. All that long blond hair alone would’ve been enough to get this poor boy’s heart racing, but combined with his skimpy little top and those tight tight jeans. Please. And naturally, the girls flew in from Toronto with the kids adorably in tow. My lord how they have grown. Although they still weren’t old enough for the evening’s festivities and would, sadly, be sitting this one out. In short, just everyone who mattered to Michael and Ben were here and me and my boys were ready for ‘em.

They’d cleverly rented a ballroom at the Hilton. Okay, seriously…woo…hoo, but instead of using the hotel’s services, Dishin’ It Baby would be doing the catering and, rightly or wrongly, that continued to be me. We had apparently become the catering service to use, at least around these parts, although, quite frankly, through some connections of Drew’s, we were, once again, moving right along into the upper echelons of Pittsburgh society. Eat your heart out AllOccassionsCartering. Who’s laughing now…huh?

Because really, when Vic died, over 4 years ago now, well…that threw me for a time. A great deal of the fun was just sucked right out of doing this, but I kept right on anyway ‘cause I just knew that’s what he would’ve wanted me to do. But it just wasn’t the same and honestly, I went through some trying shit lookin’ to find the perfect chef before I finally found my Joel. After that, everything just seemed to start fallin’ into place. Joel and me, we clicked right away and the world just made a little more sense after that. Drew confided to me that he’d have been jealous if Joel wasn’t so old. See? While I did tell Drew about George, I may have neglected to mention how old he’d been when we were involved and honestly, I could find no compelling reason to do so now. Let sleeping dogs lie, like I always say.

So for his celebration, I’d pretty much played it Zen for Ben…simple, elegant, understated. I’d set my mood with the invitations, which were engraved in maroon on an off-white paper handmade by a woman I knew who I was personally trying to keep in business. In setting up the ballroom, I’d used the Carnegie Mellon gold and maroon so very very sparingly, but everywhere possible and even if without their plaid, thank you very much. And I liked it. This subtle thing, working within limitations forced me to become more creative in a way. It was like working with less so that each thing I did stood out more. Interesting concept.

Everyone told me how wonderful everything was, what a fantastic job we’d done. Even Brian. He actually walked right up to me and while looking around kind of admiringly said, “Hey, Em, not bad.” Honestly, if I could’ve just died right in that moment and gone straight to heaven, I would‘ve been content, no lie. I actually had to step outside for a time to collect myself. A proud moment and one I will not likely forget. But really, the thing I’d come to thrive on most about this business was how, even though I was working, I got invited to every celebration, every party, every event that mattered to my friends and family. Justin believed that one day I was gonna be a major player, a star in my own right, and that just might be so, but for right now, I was really quite happy here in little ole Pittsburgh bein’ the star caterer to those around me. And, of course, also being a sought-after caterer to the upper echelons of Pittsburgh society surely couldn‘t hurt because, as dear as they were to me, my friends and family weren’t going to keep me in business. Not at these prices anyway.
