Seemingly random this month...ah well.

Thursday August 1, 2013_July reading.
August01_2013_July reading
I finished The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy by Douglas Adams, which when I read it the first time, he hadn't even entirely written. I am glad to have now completed the series. Jesus Land by Julia Scheeres is a memoir I read because Lauren said I had too, it was just that good and she was right. Every Day by David Levithan is the story of a 15 year old who wakes up every day as some new, other 15 year old, different genders, different races, different social standings etc. Mister Monday & Grim Tuesday are the first of seven books in the Kings to the Kingdom young reader series by Garth Nix. Each book is named after a day of the week and each day of the week represented one of the seven deadly sins. I'll try a summation next month when I post about the other 5 books :)

Friday August 2, 2013_We did this month's bookclub, Seriously, I'm Kidding by Ellen DeGeneres, at Katie's, which has this view from in front of her house. The 'meeting' was held in her backyard, under the stars while we drank sangria and munched on much deliciousness and discussed life and, at times, even the book. Lovely evening.

Carl Sagan's Billions and Billions is wonderful and wonderful!! The Wednesday Wars by Gary Schmidt, which was the bookclub book, is a lovely teacher/student relationship developed over the course of a school year of Wednesdays through Shakespeare. Higher by Neal Bascomb is about the sky-scraper building battle between the Chrysler Building and 40 Wall Street with the Empire State thrown in for good measure. What went on to get these buildings built was amazing outrageous. Plus my reread of rest of The Seventh Tower series by Garth Nix, the first of which I reread in May and all of which I love!!

June01_2013_Sunday_May reading & vids
I've been all about rereading lately, books of my (and Lauren's) youth. My youth is represented by Orwell's Nineteen Eight-Four and Bradbury's The Martian Chronicles. Both books held much meaning to me when still a teen and rereading them has reminded me why. Bradbury was an especially favorite which definitely puts me NOT in the hard core science-fiction camp. Representing Lauren's youth is The Seventh Tower series by Garth Nix. The Fall is book one of seven.
Black Holes Explained certainly did (only 6 half-hour episodes) while Writing Creative Nonfiction (24 episodes) was full of terrific tips, pitfalls, and insights.

Tuesday June 4, 2013_I desperately needed to prune my rose tree so I did. One cut vine fell on a low growing juniper and I liked the look so I photographed it with just a bit of purposeful arranging.

June30_2013_Sunday_La Brea Tar Pits
This place was such fun. We did a tour with a docent who was full of interesting information. This is a working museum with the Project 23 tar pit being dug every day. While we were there a Saber-tooth cat's skull was found!! Inward toward the museum, behind the earthen berm which surrounds it, the bones are kept in metal cases, very protected. The frieze runs the entire top of the building. The museum also contains a working laboratory where technicians are kept busy cleaning the bones.

I kind of forgot to post April's photos in April, oh dear me, so, I guess now is as good a time as any.

April Photographs
Monday April 5, 2013_Cindy and I drove out to Andersen's Pea Soup Restaurant located along the Pacheco Pass for a little visit with Cindy's sister, Christy, and her brother-in-law, Don, as they were driving from Arizona, where they spend half the year, to Oregon, where they spend the other half.
They had just purchased a new rig and OMG were they thrilled. It is pretty stunning even if I know I'd have much difficulty living in one despite the fact that it really is kind of nicer than my house.

The End of Eternity by Isaac Asimov was my bookclub pic which, frankly, didn't go over very well. These are NOT softcore science fiction women let alone hardcore. Update
So, within a couple of days of finishing my Happiness Month meme, I got sick, yes I did and no, I haven't dwelt overly on the implication of that juxtaposition although I'm sure one must exist. Three and a half weeks later and I'm at about 75%, although my allergies and bronchitis are seriously acting up...ah well.
The only thing I've maintained from the above-mentioned meme is meditating and even that only half-assed. Now that I am again feeling vaguely alive, I hope to do better.
I have been drawing though, have actually finished four smaller ones over the past month which is pretty awesome considering I hadn't put pencil to paper since last November...geez!! I actually got an idea, while meditating, that has helped me step up my game so, very cool. And yesterday, David and I went to University Art in Palo Alto and, man oh man, I was the proverbial kid in a candy store...I want this and I want this and and and...!!! David sweetly indulged me and I am now, at least on a personal level, a happy camper.

A quiet month it has been so, not much in the way of photographs. I fear becoming too repetitive.

But still, I have a couple to share so, I will!

Friday February 15, 2013_in the morning
First Photo: Liz, Cindy & Barbara with Ling-Ling at Barbara's new house, which is just a couple of blocks away from mine.
Second Photo: Me, Cindy & Barbara with Ling-Ling being all cute again. This is not the same Barbara who I have lunch with regularly. This Barbara, along with Liz, are the mom's of kids who went to school with Lauren and Jimmy, Cindy's son. They do coffee together a couple of times a week and now and then, I join them. Behind us is what is called a 'holding pond', which means that Barbara actually has a real view out her back sliding glass widow. Who knew such things existed and only like a couple of blacks away!!?!

Feb ruary28_2013_Thursday_February books
Thursday February 28, 2013_Books and a Great Courses
The Essential Ellison edited by Terry Dowling_Harlan Ellison is one of my favorite sf writers and this book is an anthology of many of his short stories, grouped chronologically and by type, and his critical writings. Thoroughly enjoyable reading and even if his overarching view of society is somewhat pessimistic, he still tries to provide some heart in most of his stories.
The Art of Reading is just about that, a course about how to read with more awareness as to structure and themes, style and narration etc. I've watched this before and will again.
The Imperfectionists by Tom Rachman, the bookclub's read, is about the trials and tribulations of an international newspaper based in Rome, written by a first time author who actually works for one. The chapters bounce between the current employees POV's, and the history of the paper, from its inception to the present, a structure that kept me very involved.
The Guide to Writing Fantasy and Science Fiction by Philip Athans is because I have this idea so, I'm investigating. I rarely mark up a book, but with this one, I underlined tons of tips and used blank pages to keep notes of my own. I had soooo much fun reading this book.
Crime and Punishment by Fyodor Dostoevsky is one of three books I started when much younger that I was unable to finish. Now I have. This translation by Pevear & Volokhonsky was recommended by a friend's son as the one being used in his highschool senior English class and, as far as I can tell, it's very well done. I'm glad I took the time to again attempt, and this time finish, this book.
gaeln9796: (icon art_camera)
What with this and that, photography has been kind of left in the dust, a situation I must rectify.
Focus, it's all about focus.
Nonetheless...

Wednesday January 2, 2013_December reading_The bookclub book Taming Me, told form the perspective of a feral island kitten who finally settles down with a loving family, is written by a friend of one of the bookclub women. Very cool. The Serpent and the Grail is strange. It's a retelling of the Arthurian Legend but within a inflationary multi-universe where all gods who are believed in continue to have power.

Friday February 1, 2013_January books & media_First photograph is how I set up what I'm going to read. The stack to the right is what I'm planning on reading for the next several months, the stack in the middle is the current month's, and the stack to the left is what's been done. The second photograph is December's reading & media, The Teaching Company's Masterpieces of the Imaginative Mind, which discussed Fantasy and Science Fiction books and authors which went nicely with Isaac Asimov's The Foundation Trilogy, which I loved. Asimov isn't much of a lyrical writer, but man, does he tell a good story. I'll been reading more in this series.

That is all.

Monday December 10, 2012_For most of my life, I made sure, when asked my name to be written down, that it was spelled correctly. That's G-A-Y-L-E, I would emphasize, but, interestingly I think, since the mid-2000s, I've left baristas, and such others, to their own devices with the above being the usual spelling of choice, which is just fine with me :D

Tuesday December 20, 2012_San Francisco's Modern Art Museum, aptly named SFMoMA, is closing at the beginning of this summer for two years  for extensive renovations. They grown ever bigger!! Their last BIG show, which began in October, is Jasper Johns: Seeing with the Mind's Eye. Anyone who has been with me for even awhile knows how much I adore Jasper Johns. I ADORE him I tell you so, being able to share this with my family, shown on right standing on a bridge at the George Moscone Center with the museum glowing orange in the background, was freakin' AWESOME. Sadly, photography wasn't allowed inside the show. Still, it was freakin' AWESOME.

December20_2012_Thursday-cookie makingDecember20_2012_Thursday-cookies_A
Thursday December 20, 2012_On this happy note, I close out 2012 with the kids baking a delicious variety of cookies, mainly for a coffee and cookie party I was hosting at my house the following morning for several woman friends which I forgot to take a photo of...so sad. Cindy's kitchen has an overhead light that turns her kitchen green and try as I might, I can only minimize it, not eradicate it...weird. Still, pretty blender!

December02_2012_Sunday_November books & vids
Sunday December 2, 2012_November books & vids_I find it interesting that the little tree is majorily out of focus while the books & vids are just a little. Or is it just me?
His Dark Materials by Philip Pullman was started in October but not finsihed until November, an amazing trilogy comprised of The Golden Compas, The Subtle Knife & The Amber Spyglass, it is a very complex story with multiple POV's, multiply unverses, gods, angels, warrior bears, witches, daemons, and so much more, all revolving around a 14 year girl & boy and destiny, I will read this again one day.
A Briefer History of Time by Stephen Hawking is a good overview of current physics, while Universe from Nothing: Why There is Something Rather Than Nothing by Lawrence Kraus is a fairly detailed discussion about the beginnings of the universe. My focus nonfiction-wise this year is physics so, there will be more.
The vid My Favorite Universe as taught by Neil deGrasse Tyson was WONDERFUL. Oh my goodness, the man loves his subject and that shows in all that he says and does. Also, Ancient Civilivations was very interesting, starting with Sumer and ending just before Greece takes off.
And last, Making Rounds With Oscar by David Dosa MD, my bookclub book, is about a cat who lives in a facility for people with varying degrees of dementia, that seems to clearly know when one of those patients is about to die. Very poingant.

Oh minimalism, where have you gone!!

Still, most of these photos were taken Friday and Saturday but a couple were taken today, Monday so, I'm making this a two week post because it is fairly heavy photo-wise, even if I have kept them smallish, as these are about process. Over the weekend, we redid our driveway and it is now so so so cool!!!

These first 2 show a BEFORE and an AFTER. BEFORE, we had no rebar or even gravel so, we had cracks everywhere. AFTER we have rebar with gravel under it. We did what's called a salt finish, which adds just a subtle texture, with a brushed 1 foot wide border. In the second photo, you can see the texture somewhat. Further down, you'll be able to better see the border. We also fixed an ugly edge into a lovely curve. All and all, we are very pleased.

And shhhhh, don't tell Lauren, we're keeping it a surprise for her until she comes home in November :D

And the AFTERS_Taken Monday October 22, 2012_I have a little work to do fixing the panting beds, but at least now the plants on the right side aren't all up against the edge. These have most of the salt washed away but residue remains still. We have to 'water' it every day for at least 2 weeks, the longer it stays damp, the longer it takes to cure and the stronger it will be. And that's also how long the cars are supposed to stay in the street since we can't drive on it.

October08_2012_Monday_Cosmos
Monday October 8, 2012_Cosmos_I had begun rewatching this series, off of Netflix streaming hence the red bar at the bottom of the TV screen, the week before, remembering with each next episode why it had had such a profound affect on me when I'd first seen it when it originally aired in 1980. Where necessary, episodes have been updated in 1993 to reflect the then current science. Carl Sagan's joy and passion for cosmology, history, biology etc. shines through continually. I was worried, before I started watching, that it might seem worn, outdated, no longer relevant. I needn't have worried. If anything, Mr. Sagan's ideas and beliefs are even more relevant now than ever before.

What a joy!!!

October01_2012_Monday_books over the summer
Monday October 1, 2012_Over the summer, I reread a few books I've carried around with me forever. I'd hoped by rereading them, I would understand why I have been carrying them around with me forever and now I do. They are wonderful stories, mostly science-fiction, a genre I love..

October03_2012_Wednesday_My Favorite Universe
Wednesday October 3, 2012_I began a new Teaching Company vid called My Favorite Universe by Neil deGrasse Tyson. While a little old (2003), this 12 eppie series was so wonderful and I learned a great deal. He is a terrific, enthusiastic teacher.

For those interested, Spaghettification is is the vertical stretching and horizontal compression of objects into long thin shape in a very strong gravitational field like Black Holes to paraphrase Wikipedia. Cosmologists :-))

October04_2012_Thursday_365 photo project_annotation
Thursday October 4, 2012_It's one thing to remember to take the photos, it's another to get them processed, it's yet another to gather them all up coherently into an album, but without annotation there's much less context than the passage of time requires. So, I annotate, my first project completed under my new [livejournal.com profile] mission101 list, my 2nd 365 Project annotated. Go me!!
