about...

they exclaim, "OhMyGod we have so got to get that magazine, I get to read it first.'
Because that is what Lauren did.
And not because of Zac BUT because of Simon.

I'm doing such a good job with her.

 

On-the-other-hand
she just finished reading Jack London's "Sea-Wolf'.

In it there's a passage where Wolf Larsen, the Captain of the sealing vessel, the Ghost,
 yells to his men that if they don't do as he wants them to
he will see them all in
'kingdom come'

Lauren, not unreasonably, wanted to know where kingdom come was.
I told her that my feeling was -- being alive on this little blue ball is the kingdom that is
and that heaven is the kingdom to...come
hence...kingdom come. as in after leaving the current kingdom that is.
I know...I could be wrong but she went with it.
She said, 'oh' all thoughtful-like.

I asked her what she had thought.
She told me that she had thought that Kingdom Come was a place like, ya know,
Timbuktu.
So...yeah.

Anybody know where Timbuktu is?

And, I actually do have a little Brian_Justin story about ready to go to beta so...soon...ish.

Timbuktu's in west Africa. It's an actual city. I had a half a lecture on it in my Islamic Art History class. It used to be a one of the greatest cities in Western Africa and a very important cultural center for Islam, during the late medieval period. There are tons of famous mosques and madrasas there but most of them are falling apart today sadly.

I've always thought Kingdom come had to something to do with the a Bible verse or something. I'm not religious at all so I can't say. But I think you are right. I'm pretty sure it's meant to refer to the next world, end of this world, end of time, something to that effect.

thanks for the info, I thought in Africa but wasn't sure where. It just made me laugh that she thought kingdom come was a real and actual place, just exotic like Timbuktu and that, like you, since I am not religious, I really wasn't sure I knew what I was talking about. I like your idea of a Bible verse.

I just looked it up. It's from the Lord's Prayer:

Our Father in heaven,
hallowed be your name,
your kingdom come,
your will be done,
on earth as in heaven.
Give us today our daily bread.
Forgive us our sins
as we forgive those who sin against us.

and deliver us from evil.

Thank you, I'll have her read this, she should have some knowledge of things religious so she can, on some level, understand the references to it made in the books she reads or the movies she sees.. I'll start with this.

I have a couple of thoughts. I'm from Missouri and my Dad's family came from the south. I've heard it as a phrase that was "send him to kingdom come" meaning to kill someone. Also, it's from "the Lord's Prayer" where it says, "Thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven."
(It's been so long since I went to church, I can't cite the exact reference on that.) But I imagine the phrase was commonly used and London picked it up. So, you made a pretty accurate deduction, I'd say.

I read the Sea Wolf when I was in High School and it made a big impression on me. I wanted to live all those adventures.

On a completely different topic: Is that a picture of Simon in your icon? Was there a picture of him with the story? If so, he looks GOOD!

That is Simon, I got the pic from a post url_girl did about him a while back and messed with it some. The current issue of 'Details' isn't out yet, Lauren and I checked and couldn't find it (only on their site) and only Decembers on news-stands but I doubt there's a pic of him in it, doesn't much like being photographed from what I understand. I read the article from an email sent to me by a yahoo group dedicated to the writings of Simon, they have tons archived.

Looks like I did okay in my explanation to her. thanks for the info. I thought the book was wonderful but, honestly, Lauren had problems with it, she's likes fantasy and had trouble trying to picture what London was describing especially about sailing, all the tec terms left her confused.

Timbuktu is in central Africa, on the southern border of the Sahara Desert. In the mid-15th C., it was a center of Islamic learning, but tribal warfare destroyed its scholarly civilization toward the end of the century. It is now part of Mali, a small, impoverished backwater town.

When I was little, I would hear people reference it as someplace far way and exotic. I thought it was in Arizona...Timbuktu, Arizona sounds right, doesn't it?

In the days before swearing was an accepted thing, in the days of "Take that, you bounder," "Kingdom Come" was a common expression in confrontation. Where they would threaten to "Send you to kingdom come," or "Knock you into kingdom come."
Hasn't really been that long ago. During my lifetime, anyway.

I agree with you, she is a treasure and hard fought for -- I was nearly forty-three when she was born and my first -- just don't let her hear you say that. Every time she does something wrong, she'll be all 'well, critic says I'm a treasure so...pfftt.

thanks for the info. I remember in the story, the narrator, Humphrey Van something, says 'oh God' in front of a woman and feels the need to apologize profusely (she was very understanding given the circumstances). I was like WTF.

You're very patient, and you TALK with your girl. I appreciate that a lot. It seems as if parents don't have neither time not patience to talk with their over-inquisitive children these days.

I learned something new today: what a phrase "kingdom come" means. My dirty brains thought it meant something else. But in the end, both versions have the same meaning: it's a place with no return.

I'm glad you're writing a story. Does it have something to do with we talked about it a few days ago? Do I need to write my homework all the same?

you have to be patient these days, the world is complicated. You know, so much going on and they're learning everything so much younger. One of the main reasons we had her later in life is so we would have the time, I can be home when she's out of school, that kind of thing, unlike when I was growing-up and both my parents worked.

I'm kind of surprised how many don't know what it means, I thought Lauren and I were the only ones.

This new story is just a little one, part of the few others I've already written about Brian getting to New York after Justin has already been there for about five years.

The one we've talked about is still waiting but you don't need to do your 'homework' just yet. I have another, a Lindsay mostly-canon story, I'll probably do next. It is nice to be writing again, it's been a long time. But I do want your ideas so when you're ready, let me know.

I know, I have a simon icon, how weirdly cool is that, and yes, lauren does have her moments. I now know quite a bit more about Timbuktu, Africa is right, near the Sahara, apparently a big deal, an Islamic cultural center, in the fourteen hundred until brought down by tribal dissension. I am now with knowledge.

I don't know, at my age, I'd make all the tabloids, undoubtedly do all the rounds at all talk shows but after the spotlight faded I'd be left with a kid...at my age so yeah, better knowledge.
