Tuesday July 1, 2014_June media_a Tennessee Williams bio which was fascinating and just a little depressing; an entire book about the pivotal year of 1959; The Americans, the photography of Robert Frank; Moonwalking With Einstein, about a journalist's personal journey in the world of memory competition that I loved, and The Hotel on Place Vendome, the true story of Paris's Hotel Ritz during its WWII occupation, my bookclub recommendation which everyone enjoyed!!!

And we've been doing this, either Saturday morning breakfast at a local restaurant or evening treats at one of our houses every 6 weeks for 14 years! Amazes me!

What was depressing about Williams life?

I know nothing about it.

Such fun you are having.

Great!

His early years, while still at home, were apparently not the best. His father was a big-deal executive at Ford and Williams was neglected a great deal of the time, time which he spent inventing characters to keep himself from being lonely. But, it seems, the main problem for him was a life-long battle with depression. Also, now it's been revealed that he had the early onset of Parkinson's disease which, especially as such a physical comedian, had to have been utterly terrifying to contemplate. Shows you how bad his mind-set was because, otherwise, he had three terrific kids, a young, fairly new third wife and lived in a lovely home in Tiburon up in Marin County just north of San Francisco, his show had been renewed for another season, they were going to do a sequel to Mrs. Doubtfire and etc. etc.. Just so sad.

We are having a good summer!!

The Fourth of July is a fun holiday and the only one where it has a pretty good chance of being good weather so you can have your party outside. I am glad that you had a good one.

Great pictures, as usual.

I just read a review of a new biography of Tennessee Williams which the reviewer liked a great deal. Of course, I failed to note the name of the book or the author and promptly threw the review out. I read a biography of Williams a year ago or two, and would like to read another slant on him. If I stumble across the author and title, I'll send them to you.

My daughter-in-law Pam just spent a week on business in Heidelburg (where she and John lived for more than three years) and was able to go to her book club meeting while she was there. It's a different arrangement from any book club I've heard of. They meet once a month, rotating among houses, and the host of the last meeting brings the book club tub with her, Every month each member reports on a book she has read and puts it in the tub. She then takes another book out of the tub for the next month. When everybody who wants to has read a book, it's retired and a new book is put into circulation. That sounds like a pretty nifty idea to me.

Thank you!! Please do send me the info if you remember it. I love biographies.

How cool that your daughter-in-law was able to make her book club!! Their bookclub idea is very different although my favorite aspects to the way we do it is that we can all discuss the same book at the same time AND we are all challenged to read books we otherwise might never read. When we started this I almost exclusively read nonfiction or science fiction but my ladies opened me up to more mainstream novels and that's been fun!! I'm afraid that given a choice, I might allow certain books to be retired without my having taken the time to read something I otherwise wouldn't.
